Since my bladder cancer was not responding to immunotherapy, I decided to move ahead with a Radical Cystectomy (Bladder Removal) with Neobladder Diversion. A neobladder is the surgical creation of a new bladder using a segment of the small intestine as opposed to an external bag. This is a long and complicated procedure. The operation was done in mid-March 2023 at Albany Medical Center and lasted 12 hours. The removal of the bladder, prostate and lymph node was performed by Dr Adrien Bernstein and the neobladder part was done by Dr Brian Inouye, both from Albany Medical Urology and has been a complete success. There have been no complications and zero pain - I was up walking the next day and felt great thereafter. The staff at AMC was also great including the nurses, residents etc and were all very caring and helpful. From my own experience here, I would highly recommend AMC Urology and these surgeons in particular.
