Many years ago my husband was seriously sick. His illness was in the exact field of Dr. Roehrborn knowledge. The way to him was long and hard- I had to see many a "specialists" urologists before trough some people I knew, I learned the name of our Doctor-whom we forever now call our God. He did surgeries and after them took the best care of my spouse. We wish him the best of health and happiness for many years to come !!

In summary, I believe Dr. Claus Roehrborn of UT Southwestern is one of the best five doctors in the country to perform a robotic radical prostatectomy. He has performed over 2,800 of these surgeons. I had one of the most aggressive prostate cancers you can have…a tertiary 5…with a Gleason Score of 8 to 9. The major risks of this surgery are (1) getting all of the cancer, (2) incontinence and (3) restoration of sexual function. My surgery was extremely successful and I fully recovered and my life was totally back to normal in 4-5 weeks after surgery. I am 61 years old and generally in excellent health. I realize others have had this surgery and not ever achieved a full recovery, and for that I thank Dr. Roehrborn. My quality of life is excellent!!!

I was absolutely astounded by the knowledge of Dr Roehrborn concerning my Prostate Cancer. He told me my options, we made a decision on what to do. I knew I was in the best hands available. He truly is remarkable and very caring.

I woke up from surgery with no pain, my stay was over night. The cath was not painful, what a relief! Had some pain for the first day and a half during urination but no big deal. Seeing blood for three weeks but with no pain. After the first day I was peeing like a race horse. From the first I had no leaking at all and almost no urgency after first day. All I can say is this; a miracle happen in the valley of good and evil. I feel like a new man at 57. Dr. Claus Roehrborn is a genius.

Claus Roehrborn, M.D. reviews GOOGLE REVIEW SUMMARY 5 4 3 2 1 4.5 8 reviews GOOGLE REVIEWS Most relevant Mark and/or Rosie Mark and/or Rosie 7 reviews · 1 photo 7 minutes ago My 61 year old husband was diagnosed with Gleason 10 prostate cancer that spread to his lymph nodes on one side. His urologist didnt think he could operate, or anyone for that matter, and suggested androgen deprivation and radiation. We did research and heard about Dr. Roehrbon and went to him. He did surgery and the margins were undetectable. He got all the cancer! Pathology came back scoring his Gleason lower at a 9, well take that. It has been one and a half years since surgery, he had 49 bouts of radiation and is on the lupron shot for another year. Dr. Roehrbon have him a longer life, God bless this gifted surgeon. My husbands PSAs are undetectable, as expected with the lupron shot. But had we listened to the first doctor or had this great doctor not got all the cancer out wed be looking at a life expectancy of five to ten years. We highly recommend him and if you are the praying type say a prayer for my husband that the cancer never return.

I have had doctors before him and after him. He was the most professional. Dr. Roehrburn saved my life with the correct diagnosis and correct treatment. Its been 7 years since he operated on me and Im still doing great. I have moved 1200 miles from him but if I had a serious urological problem, I would see him some how. Life is good Dr. Roehrburn, Thank you.

Dr. Roehrborn performed my diagnosis and radical prostatectomy in 2013. The operation and its outcome were exactly as he predicted. There were no complications. His approach, expertise, professionalism and skills are outstanding.

I was diagnosed with prostate cancer in my early 50s. Not really wanting to have surgery, I opted for radioactive seed implants, which worked, but gave several complications. Not the least of those complications was it stopped working and my cancer returned in a very aggressive form. My urologist suggested seeing Dr. Roehrborn as one of the best surgeons in the country. Unlike some of the reviews, Ive read, I did not find him to be uncaring, just very straightforward and matter of fact. My surgery was very complicated because of the tissue damage caused by the radioactive seeds. What usually takes an hour and a half ended up as over four hours in surgery. It was rough, but I came out of it OK. Over seven years later, Im still cancer free with an undetectable PSA.

Roehrborn and believe I was also very fortunate and blessed. I visited with 6 different doctors, including two from Plano, TX, two from Dallas, one from MD Anderson and one from Memorial Sloan Kettering in New York. I have had four heart procedures/surgeries at the Cleveland Clinic, so I am very familiar with and very comfortable getting on a plane and having surgery by the best doctor to perform that surgery. I considered all kinds of treatments, including IMRT (Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy) radiation, SBRT (Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy or “CyberKnife”) radiation, Hormone Therapy or Androgen Deprivation Therapy (“ADT”), Proton Therapy, HIFU (High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound), Brachytherapy (seed radiation) and prostatectomy. Frankly, before I considered all alternatives and talked with 6 doctors, prostatectomy was the lowest on my list. I chose prostatectomy because of the serious and aggressive nature of my prostate cancer—it had the best chance of being successful in eliminating the cancer. I realize other patients will choose other options that are dependent upon their particular cancer, their age and health. I decided to be treated by Dr. Roehrborn at UT Southwestern in Dallas, close to where I live. Irrespective of the stage and seriousness of your cancer, I recommend that you be treated by Dr. Roehrborn. I learned after reading the literature, there is a 35-40% chance of a false negative on a biopsy if you do the “random” kind where a doctor takes 12-15 samples randomly. Basically, the doctor is looking at less than 1% of the prostate, so it is easy to miss cancer. Also, you could get a “false positive”, which is you are told you have a Gleason Score of 6 (usually treated with “active surveillance”), but you really have a Gleason Score of 7 or 8 (which is usually treated with radiation or prostatectomy). I had an MRI done on a 3T MRI machine w/dye (very important) by another doctor (at my insistence…he did not want to do it…one doctor even told me that my insurance would not cover an MRI…false). I had the MRI sent to Dr. Daniel Costa at UT Southwestern, who works with Dr. Roehrborn and is excellent. The MRI showed the placement of my tumor was on the edge and apex of the prostate, making it very risky to biopsy because of the possibility of “breaking the capsule” and causing my cancer to spread throughout my body and metastasize (which is an extremely bad and usually fatal result). At Dr. Roehrborn’s direction, I did an MRI-guided in bore biopsy with Dr. Costa. That was on a Tuesday around 10 am. At 5:30 pm on Wednesday (the following day), Dr. Roehrborn calls me and tells me that I have a 4+4=8 (on Gleason scale of 6 to 10). He recommends a robotic radical prostatectomy. I ask him about radiation, and he says he does not think that is the best choice because (a) it has a smaller chance of being successful stopping the cancer, and (b) once you do radiation, it is very difficult and highly unlikely to do a successful prostatectomy, and (c) once you do a prostatectomy, if you have a reoccurrence years down the road, radiation is an excellent additional treatment option (among others), if ever needed. Also, a word about Dr. Roehrborn’s communications methods and “bedside manner”. He does not wait to call you into his office, give you bad news and give you tissue or his shoulder to cry on. He simply calls you and factually tells you everything he knows as soon as he knows it. Yes, it is traumatic, and he is very business-like and to the point. He does not mince words or soften the bad news. But he tells you EVERYTHING he knows (very different from some other doctors with which I interacted on this issue) and ALWAYS answers all of your questions. He also met with me and my wife prior to surgery to answer all of my questions at my request. He met my us two hours after I requested the meeting. Later, I emailed him at 11 pm one night and he responded to my 6 bullet point questions at 4:30 am the next morning, concisely and straightforward, giving me his percentage opinion (varies from patient to patient) of my prevailing on the three riskiest aspects of the surgery (getting all of the cancer 80%, no incontinence of significance 95%, restoration of sexual function 70% if I follow ALL of his recommendations). If you read the other reviews, many people “downgrade” him for his “bedside manner” and very factual responses. I personally want all of the information so I can make an informed decision—and I also learned that other doctors do not give you all of the information and discuss all the risks. But if you want a doctor to whom you can go and cry on his shoulder, Dr. Roehrborn is not for you. I had a “bone scan”, which showed the cancer had not yet spread, but is not conclusive (cancerous micro-organisms can be spreading and it would not show up). This result allowed me to have my robotic radical prostatectomy. It is important to walk around as quickly as possible after the surgery and to get your digestive system working. These all really help with recovery. Six (6) days after the surgery, Dr Roehrborn calls me at home at 9:10 pm (yes, very late in the evening) and gives me the results of the biopsy on my removed prostate. The biopsy showed the margins (the edges of the prostate) were negative and the 17 lymph nodes (the cancer usually spreads through the lymph nodes to your body…you have 100’s of lymph nodes in your body) were negative—which was great news! It means the cancer was all contained and removed. There were VERY important decisions made as to which parts to take and which parts to leave surrounding the prostate—a fine line between getting all of the cancer vs. allowing for control and sexual function after the surgery. This is where the importance of initial diagnosis via MRI’s and the skill of the surgeon is so critical. Random biopsies do NOT give the surgeon enough information to customize the surgery. One size does not fit all. Dr. Roehrborn also told me on this call that I also had the tertiary 5 cancer that was successfully removed…making the success and timing of the surgery even more critical to keep it from spreading and metastasizing. A month after the surgery, I had a PSA that showed 0.03. This also confirmed that Dr. Roehrborn got all of the cancer! The PSA will be watched for 10+ years to make sure there is no “biochemical reoccurrence”, or the cancer starts coming back. Because of my very aggressive cancer, that is more likely with me than others. But with Dr. Roehrborn’s successful surgery, he has minimized that as much as humanly possible and given me the best quality of life possible!!!

Medical skills are good, but seriously lacking in bedside manner

Dr. Roehrborn recommended and performed my RRP. He did not get all the cancer. I now leak, wear a pad a day and am undergoing salvage radiation therapy. In retrospect, I should have considered Proton Radiation treatment, but Dr. Roehrborn did not discuss this option with me.

He diagnosed Prostate Cancer in my husband in 2007. After he operated on him he informed us that he didnt find cancer! The operation left my husband incontinent and impotent. When we complained he treated my husband very badly acting like it was somehow my husbands fault to get rid of us! We went to MD Anderson in Florida to try to get the incontinence repaired to no real avail! Still goes thru 5 Depends per day! This man took my husbands manhood and didnt even say he was sorry...

I selected him based on his credentials. I had BHP with slightly diminished urine flow. 16 years ago I had a successful laser treatment. I visited him to receive a similar treatment. He claimed that my prostrate was too large for the TURP procedure. He insisted that I needed a partial prostatectomy. He apparently was too busy to fully explain the procedure yet he warned me to not go to the internet for more information. I was given no warning regarding potential negative ramifications. After 2 unsuccessful surgeries by him I now am incontinent and use 7 or 8 pads per day to collect the leakage. I wake up on the average of 7 times per night to urinate. He now recommends a 3rd surgical attempt to resolve the problem. I have now found a new urologist to correct his inept surgeries. Furthermore I have no legal recourse because Texas law does not allow state employees to be sued. He is employed by UT Southwestern, a state-run hospital. STAY AWAY!

I was seen by Dr. Roehrborn who I found to be one of the most arrogant physicians I have ever met. Despite all of his swagger, he is a second rate intellect and an incompetent surgeon, particularly with the da Vinci robot. I can really relate to some of the comments made by the other individuals on this website. He however has the luxury of residing at UTSW. He actively -- promotes-- surgery with the da Vinci robot, discourages a second opinion, and has poor follow up. Once the surgical fee has been secured for your procedure, there is no further interest in you as a patient. When he makes a mess of the situation, he wishes to wash his hands of you. I have found him to be lacking in integrity and morally repugnant.

For diseases like cancer, it is important for the treating physician to show he/she cares. Dr. Roehrborn does not.

He performed a prostate biopsy on me that was very painful. His nurse called with results of the biopsy saying I had prostate cancer but not to worry. I asked three times over a three day period for him to call me,and he finally did so after I threw a fit with the office manager. I wouldnt consider using him nor would I recommend him. People dont care how much you know until they know how much you care. By his actions, he sent me the message that he didnt care. He may or may not be brilliant, but his attitude in my dealings with him was extremely poor.
